A smattering of random images from the last several months.

Barker looking for a fight

The old man in his chair. It took open heart surgery before my dad got "his" chair. I think he has earned.

Benji doesn't like the loud noises from band practice so he hides under a blanket on the couch.

Playing for Change

I see this dude everywhere. He always has his guitar and is always playing it. It doesn't matter if he is walking or sitting he is playing that guitar.

Thats it. That is just a portion of the last 3 months.
Just created a new flickr account. http://www.flickr.com/photos/42409031@N06/

So the weather is finally nice and things are starting to kick into high gear.
I don't have a lot of exciting stuff to post because well... not much has happened.
So here are a few shots from a few shows.

The Effort

Not The Effort

I have a few more things I'm going to publish here after a bit.
I've been relaxing all day, so I will post when I have a few moments. :)

Hope everyone is doing well!
Get outside and enjoy the sun while its around.

I bought a lomo action sampler and 10 rolls of expired Fuji Velvia 100 iso color slide film before I took off for New Orleans with the mission to shoot as much as I could. I didn't get the chance to process any film out of the camera before I left so I was just shooting off of instinct. The lomo's are brilliant because you don't really have any control over anything. You kinda just point in a general direction and hit the shutter release. You don't control anything except for the composition and unless you compensate even that is a bit off.
It is/was my let loose camera. I say was because I actually broke the film advance when I was in NOLA by not paying attention... so I think I have to buy a new one.
Anyways. I cross processed the film to give it a more surreal look and crazy colors.
None of this is photo shopped. Its all straight out of the camera/processing. I just tweaked my blacks a bit to get them BLACK.
Enjoy.

So I need to make $50 and get after this. I love this camera. I feel I am going to go broke shooting film this summer... it'll be worth it though :)

Seth

First fire pit of the summer.

White Kids Dancing...

The weather has not been that nice so far. We've had one good week of weather and a bunch of nights of crappy cold weather. Here's to hoping things swing around here in a hurry. Its June. I need the sun and time at the lake.

Hope everyone is doing well.

I make images because I want to remember.
I make images because I want others to see things they may not notice.
I make images because I love the people around me and I want to document our interactions.

I'm going to make it a goal to make a lot of pictures this summer. Good, bad, indifferent.
My favorite images are the ones I make when I'm not working.

Last night was the kick off to summer and it was everything it needed to be.
I love you guys. You make my heart happy.

Terrorizing the neighbors. Karate Elvis didn't know what hit it!

Reflecting on his epic battle with Karate Elvis. It was truly a television event.

Two of my favorite people :)

This should be a pretty interesting summer.
It won't be last summer which is fine by me. Let the past rest, live in the moment.
Good days are ahead. :)

I'm not fond of sports. I haven't been fond of sports for quite some time. I don't understand the idea of competing for the sake of saying I'm better than you. I guess to each there own. Even though I'm not super fond of sports (minus hockey and baseball, love me some hockey) I find that I don't really mind shooting them. It's pretty easy to be honest with you. Just find your angle and as an early editor of mine said when you see a face shoot! Its a hell of a lot more complex than that but the principle is the same.
I found myself at the state track meet for the second year in a row. It was a lot more stressful this year than last, I don't think editors realize what it takes to make an image and that asking for extra images for a bunch of different papers is taxing and lessens the amount of time you can spend shooting your home schools. I also don't think they understand how these events run and that even if I could split myself in three there still wouldn't be enough of me to cover this one event. Oh well, what do I know, I'm just a photographer.
I made some cool images, unfortunately my favorite images were not of local kids so they ended up on the AP wire... which isn't the worst thing in the world. It means the rest of the world gets to see them and there isn't anything wrong with that. So here are a few images.

So just a few images.

I hope everyone is doing well.

I should have a few more images from New Orleans up later this week.
I'm letting those sit for just a bit before digging through them.

So I put all this work into pulling these files for Eddie Adams and never got to enter thanks to to Greg Laurie and his merry band of bad drivers so I thought I would just throw them up here just for the hell of it.
I'm about 10 minutes away from heading back out the door onto the streets of New Orleans to partake in what will be a legendary night. More photos later. My desire to shoot and shoot and shoot has curtailed as the week has gone one but I've made a few fun frames of people being people and a few artsy shots.
Anyways less talk, more pictures.

So there they are. Just an easy edit of some work that defines who I am and the way I shoot.
Its not a portfolio, just a collection of images.
More stuff from NOLA later, maybe today but more than likely Monday afternoon.
I hope everyone is doing well.
Adventure awaits.

Seth

The last two days have been incredibly amazing.
The light down here is bad ass. I'm seeing so much right now and making some images that I'm pretty pleased with. We don't have any real plans during the day other than wander and wander we have. We spent all day in the cemetery making images and the last two nights have been all about the French Quarter. There is nothing better than being able to grab a drink and just walk around.
I don't know why they call Las Vegas sin city, Las Vegas doesn't have crap on NOLA. :)
I'm going to share just a few images. 5 to be exact from last night and today. Its late, I'm tired and I don't feel like toning the rest of these images. PLUS I need something to do next Monday on the plane ride home. :)
Every single image posted from New Orleans is for sale, we can talk when I get back.

Blind man begging for change.

This dude was straight up nuts. He was chill for a while and then just lost his damned mind, started yelling at me. So I just rolled out. Don't need that nasty garbage ruining my good time.

This dude was a little off his rocker as well... common theme so far.

The man has a point...

So far things have been amazing. The food, the colors, the art, the people... all just amazing. I feel very comfortable here, very at home. Its laid back and relaxed. I just feel good, it makes it easy to make photos. I have so many more things to share with you but as Richard has so aptly put it, I just want to be in New Orleans at the moment. So I will post a few images and maybe tell a story but a lot of this can wait until later. Life is to short to not live in the moment. To not be here right now.
Right now the moment is calling for sleep. its 1:30 in the a.m. and there is a sweet little deli just around the corner serving grits with my name on them sometime around 9 tomorrow morning so I'm hitting the hay. Going to a big photo show tomorrow, super stoked to look at some good images and talk art.
I love it here.

I hope everyone is doing well.

Seth

Coming to you live from New Orleans, LA!
We are taking a few moments to rest after a good day of travel and walking around the greater downtown area, eating good middle eastern food and having a few brown bag drinks on the street. I drank something called JOOSE... its got a lot of alcohol in it and fortunately or unfortunately it also has some of the same crap that the energy drinks have in them. So basically what I'm saying is this stuff tastes like diesel fuel.
We are just getting ready to head back out to Bourbon St. for drinks and... well whatever happens.
7 days in the big easy, life really doesn't get much better than this.
Pictures from this morning. Its me a 24-70, the old 20D and my lomo action sampler. Yup I'm shooting the old 20D and film on this adventure. Craziness I know but its been a good camera to me for a number of years and has been good to me so far.

I've never flown over the top of Mt. Rushmore but we did today on the flight to Denver. Bad Ass... its tiny but its there!

It's the big easy kids and yes that little brown squiggle is the Mississippi River.

Hanging out on the street. Wish I would have shot a few other angles on this but I was damned hungry.

In case you forgot where we were.

The age old art of flyering. I want to shoot this again, the number of staples on this bored was insane!

Brown Bag Memories!

Worst street performer ever! He offered to make a balloon animal for a kid and the kids parents snatched their kid away. Hilarious!

The life! :)

The weather has been nice so far. About 75-80 today with a nice breeze. Beautiful.
The room we are staying in is crazy. There is a crazy looking almost hole in the ceiling and one of the end caps on the bed is missing... we've come to a few conclusions but its a total mystery that we intend to not only get to the bottom of but recreate. Good times. NOLA is amazing.
More photos later/tomorrow.
Out the door in a few to grab some to eat and then to Bourbon St for some craziness.
Miss you all.
Hope life is treating you as well as its treating me at the moment.
Love and light,

Seth

So I've been talking about this for a while and I haven't followed through. Not following through is one of my biggest flaws and I'm working on that starting with this...
I'm selling prints... these prints below to be more precise.
All are 8x12 hand numbered and signed. Limited to editions of 100 prints per image. (No matter the size I will only ever make 100 prints of each image)
$40 per print/$60 matted.
$5 shipping.
I'm starting with these images for the simple fact of I know where these images are on my hard drive.
I'm in the process of archiving at the moment and I'm coming across things daily.
So when I find something I would like to sell I will post it.
If your familiar with my work and there is a print that you know you want but don't see let me know and I will dig it up just for you. (Seriously... :)
If your interested in a print you can message me through facebook/myspace or email me at sellsethsell(at)gmail(dot)com (I just created this email address and will try to check it often, if you email me leave a comment here as well so it will notify me to check that email addy)
If you like BIG prints (like me) I can and will make huge prints just for you. Email me and we can discuss sizes and prices.

So there you have it.
I'm doing this more than just to make sure I'm following through but also because what I really want to do is travel and see the world. The more prints I can sell the closer I can come to realizing this dream. My first trip is in a few weeks. I'm heading to New Orleans to make images and hang out.
Don't get me wrong I love my current job but traveling is in my blood and its becoming more apparent to me every day that there is so much more to this world than I know and I want to see the rest of it. I want to document it. I want to meet more people and see more places.
I want to shed my foundation and float into the sky.

So lets sell some prints. You got bare walls and I have just the thing to cover it with.
I will probably be starting an etsy store here in the next few days so I can just do my transactions there.

I hope everyone is doing well.

Seth

I’ve spent the last 6 weeks following Rana Holland and her two boys
Isaac and Ethan. Rana’s husband Gregg was deployed with the South
Dakota Army National Guard. He spent the last year in Kosovo while Rana
held down the house by herself. Rana was gracious enough to allow
myself and staff writer Emilie Rusch into her home and gave us an
amazing amount of access to her daily life. Working long term projects
does have its challenges though. How do you edit 6 weeks worth of
images down to 10? How do you take 6 weeks worth of images and several
hours of audio and edit it into 2 minutes and 23 seconds? Thats been
the biggest challenge of the last 2 days. Both Emilie and I assumed we
had another week as we were planning on running the package on March
15th prior to when we thought Gregg was going to be home but we didn’t
get that opportunity as we received a call on Friday morning that Gregg
would be home Saturday night at approximately 6:23.

So I found out quickly how you get it edited down. Teamwork. Both
Ryan and Kristina helped me cut the nearly 1,500+ images down to 9 for
print and down to 25 for the slideshow. Kristina helped me establish a
voice on the piece by listening to rough cuts on the phone as I held my
cellphone to the speaker. Emilie helped me cut the audio together
allowing me to add details to the story that she couldn’t get in on the
print side adding another voice to the piece. I honestly feel humbled
to have been allowed to work on this project and to have such great
coworkers, including the editors and copy editors who worked with us on
layout and helped edit the entire thing together in just a matter of 2
days.

The last two days have been crazy. Its 2 am and I'm just finishing
up. I started work at 9 this morning. I'm tired and I'm hungry but more
than anything I'm so extremely proud of the end product on this piece.

I really feel like I've been struggling as of late.
Nothing really seems to be clicking for me artistically. I find it very frustrating. I did manage to shoot something for myself the other night.
Two kids were playing basketball under a corner street light down the street from me the other night. So I made a few photos.

I feel pretty good about these. A little something different.

I hope to have a store front set up later this weekend. Prints soon.

There are few things in life that are too funny for words.
This is one of those moments.
I laughed when I took this. I had a big shit eating grin on my face when I made the image and laughed a bit. I laughed really hard when I got back to the office. You can't make some of this stuff up.
I put together a slideshow of all the images you can view that here.
Made a few images last night that were pretty sweet. I will post those later.
School is currently kicking me in the pants but I'm getting used to it.
I have a bunch of stuff ready to go. If I find some time between rounds of homework and drawing this weekend I will post some stuff for sale.
I'm purchasing some new gear in the next month or so. Hopefully that will spur me to get out there and shoot more. New lenses next week, new body in a couple of months.
I'm looking into making a trip into Big Sky country in March. I'll keep you posted on the details.

2008...
I'm battling with what I want to say. Pouring over these digital lines trying to craft the perfect image of a year that can only be described as indescribable. 2008 was intense but dull, one of the happiest string of 366 days (after all it was a leap year) yet one of the most painful. I lived. I loved. I lost. I won. I became the butt of a joke on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno. I learned. I witnessed history first hand and viewed it in silence on a vacuum tube when it mattered most. I've met a few amazing people a long the way that I want to be apart of my life until it ends. I've met a few people I really never care to speak to again. I've learned to not be bitter... I'm still working on that. I've learned to smile and not take life so literally. I've learned to love the phrase "It is what it is" because shit is shit and there is nothing we can do about it. :) Photographically I've pushed myself farther than I have in the past and I've grown exponentially. I've had the distinct pleasure of working with two photographers who have pushed me to my limits and kept pushing. Who broke me of my bad habits and are helping me become better at my job on a daily basis. Thank you Ryan, Thank you Kristina. I owe both of you so much and I'm so very grateful and appreciative.

The above images are just a few from the last year that I felt like sharing with you. They represent just a small part of the journey I made this year. Some parts that I wanted you to see. There are a few images represented that are a part of 2007 (about 5 images, but they are important for this part of my story, for this part of my journey and I wanted you to see them to hopefully help explain 2008 a bit more.) If your interested in seeing more you can read lower on this blog or on the myspace blog (www.myspace.com/shootsethshoot) which is kept a little bit more than this one.

I do want to share one more slideshow with you.
Shaun Herrod (I was going to embed this but it autoplays and I want to share this with you second.)
I shot this at the end of 2008 and it had a huge emotional impact on me. It was a challenging shoot but an amazing story that I feel so fortunate to have been a part of. Its a story of true love in a time when that seems so vacant in our society.

I delayed posting this until today because today is supposed to be a day of change. A symbolic day of change. The last year has been about change for me and not in the Obama way. My entire life changed on December 9th, 2007 and it has shaped the last year of my life in the best of ways. It changed the way I saw things, the way I treated people and the way I made images. It made me realize the importance of those around me and telling those people how I feel about them as often as I can. You never know when this experience called life is going to be over. I was given a gift during a hard period that put it best "Be happy so long as breath is in you." Thank you Bee, you truly are amazing.

I just wanted to say thank you to all of you. I have a list 8 miles long with all of your names on it and what you mean to me but I'll keep this short and condensed. Life is nothing without friends. You are all very important to me and I thank you so much for allowing me to be a part of your world. I feel blessed you are a part of mine.
.smile. :)

I hope you are well.
Love and Light,
Seth

I'm in the middle of working a project.
Its having a huge impact on me and I can only hope that the images I make and the way I present this story will do it justice. I've been working on it since Tuesday afternoon. I shot for 4 hours tonight and collected audio.
I have roughly 1,300 images to sort through and after tomorrow morning I should have 90 minutes worth of audio to dig through to present a story in roughly two minutes. It may be a little longer than that depending on how things go in the morning and if I can pop in again tomorrow night and make a few more images. It was a short turn around on the project but I'm going to keep up with it long after tomorrow is over. It'll be the end of a chapter but not the end of the book.

This image will make no sense until tomorrow night to most but it had a huge impact on my night.
Two things in this image are related. You'll never guess which two.

A few other things I've been working on...
Christ Churches Last Mass

Rush home opener Kristina and I tag teamed this and we kicked the crap out of it!!!

Just happens to be my favorite image from the take. I worked my way in to the players tunnel and just worked it. I was looking for a wide shot but the Rush's "official" photographer was in the way (like he was for most of the night... showed up in a ton of my photos and just ruined the moment... whatevs) so I had to shoot it a lot tighter than I had originally seen it but it worked out. Love the kids hanging over the railing.

I have a ton of audio to start editing and its 1 am... I'm so in to this project I'm working on my days off well into the a.m.... ha! :)

I'm sorry to everyone who was in town this week that I didn't get to spend much time with. You all know you mean the world to me. I'll make it up to you at Christmas I promise. :)

I hope everyone is doing well.
Love and Light,

When you see a photographer pointing a huge lens (300mm f/2.8) in your general direction (because trust me he saw me) its usually a good idea not to pick your nose...

So glad state volleyball is over.
You can see a series of slideshows on the journals website of the work the three of us did over the three days. I'll post some of the outtakes and images used in the next couple of days. I'm still exhausted from lugging that 300 all around the civic center (going from the floor all the way up to the catwalk, shooting for 6 hours straight after working a 6 hour shift in the morning... ouch!)

Hope everyone is doing well.

There are many bands that I've been waiting a long time to see in Rapid. Shai Hulud is one of those bands...

I think was about the only person more excited to see Shai Hulud than I was. The sneaky bastard surprised everyone by showing up unannounced, driving 6 hours from Powell. Made my entire weekend.

The rest of the images can be seen Here

Backstreet of Osiris... I mean Bore of Osiris... Crap, Born of Osiris? were on the bill as well but I have a hard time shooting boring bands, beyond boring I have a problem photographing a manufactured metal band. If you don't write your songs but pretend you do I have no respect for your band. I gave them a Cleveland style razing, the kind that Eian would be proud of :)
I hope everyone is doing well.
I'm working on a few things. I'll post them later.

Seth
